hi 253x300 Top 10 things to say Thank you for

Our Tuesdays are now sponsored by La Scuola school. Please take a look at their site at www.reggioinspired.com and give them a call at (305) 278-9555.
              Lee says:

          10. Non Dairy Creamer: I love this stuff. It makes my coffee yummy! I have been known for traveling with a baggy full of off-white powder that I use for my pick-me-ups. I am willing to get busted for suspicion of possession. So, if you ask me how I like my coffee I say, ‘Like my men, white and sweet!’

          9. Greek Yogurt: I am in my 40s, peri-menopausal with a family history of osteoporosis; I have to get my calcium somewhere. Plus, this stuff has more protein and tastes better than the other yogurts. I like to combine plain Greek yogurt with Uncle Sam’s Cereal (which is a fiber lover’s dream) and some honey. Yummy and healthy!

          8. My Baby: Baby is the name of my little Netbook. I take that everywhere and it even fits in my purse. Baby makes it easy for us to write anywhere without having to set anything up. I even write in the car when I am waiting to pick up my son.

          7. Tom’s of Maine Toothpaste: This year I had the great fortune of finding a new allergy: toothpaste. After several weeks of rashes, I found Tom’s of Maine and it has worked wonders. No more allergies and I can actually brush my teeth. I’m sure lots of people thank Tom’s too.

          6. Fringe: I love this show. I actually get nervous watching it. Great stories.  Great characters. Great!

          5. My family and friends: What can I say, I love being loved.

          4. Ricky: That little monkey makes me laugh every day. He’s a character and I can’t wait to see what he comes up with next. Right now, he is insisting on building a gingerbread house. Now. Now. Now. Oh, and he wants to eat it at the same time. Funny kid.

          3. Bobby: This kid makes me smile. He is so intelligent it makes me wonder what he won’t be able to do in life. He is also charming. He is like a Game Show Host Savant. This is a lethal combo.

          2. Jeannie: This kid makes me proud. Sure, Jeannie likes to do things the hard way but she also makes me work harder and be a better parent. I am thankful for her and know it will be an exciting year for all of us because of her.

          1. Paul: Because he is cute, sexy and mine. (and he edits my writing)

          Paul says:

          10. Sleeping dogs: I love watching our dogs sleep especially when they are dreaming of chasing bunnies.

          9. The Script and all of the other bands that make me cry: I used to be in control of my emotions. Not anymore. Now I cry with every song that comes on the radio. Especially tear promoting for me are the two recent Script songs: The Man Who Can’t Be Moved and For The First Time.

          8. Mr. Spock: Speaking of keeping my shit together, I modeled my younger personality after Mr. Spock. I currently have his emotional control (right before he needs to get laid).

          7. 9:00 PM: The boys’ bedtime is 8 but I know that, by 9, they are asleep. Then Lee and I can sit, hold hands, and watch TV (like Fringe).

          6. Coffee: What can I say? Without it there would be no writing.

          5. My family: Yes, I am thankful for them even though they won’t be reading this.

          4. Friends: I feel safe with them and that is saying a lot. (And they will read this.)

          3. Alex: I am giving him a breakout thanks. I really like the man that he has become.

          2. My kids: They make me shake my head but they keep me laughing especially when I am crying.

          1. Lee: Smart, sexy and funny, she is the trifecta. She makes this adventure of a life something wonderful.

The holidays are a time of family, abundance and overindulgence. This year, since we have committed to eating healthier, we are combating our normal indulgence by doing pre-emptive strikes. We are not willing to lose our winning streak for some turkey and stuffing. However, we won’t lie. We are definitely eating some of that! This year, we are eating smarter. We have gone over past mistakes and are making some corrections.

First, we won’t go all day without eating. Usually, since we do most of the cooking in the family, we tend to subsist on coffee and exhaustion. This year, we will start our day with a healthy breakfast that sates all of our needs. Our go to yummy healthy breakfast is Greek yogurt, a high fiber cereal and a little honey. The cereal needs to have at least 10 grams of fiber per serving and less than 1 gram of sugar. The combination is a perfect combination of creamy, crunchy and sweet! And, the best part is that this breakfast is high in protein and fiber which will keep us from starving and picking all day. Love it!

Secondly, we are planning healthy snacks while we hang out with the family. We are bringing black bean hummus and plantain chips! Hummus is a great and when you make it with black beans, you almost double your fiber intake! Also, using plantain chips makes this whole snack really healthy. You take a can of strained black beans, fresh garlic (to taste-we like lots of garlic!) and some olive oil to smooth it out in the food processor. We add a little kosher salt and voila! This is really yummy and can also be eaten with pita and crudités.

Third, we are keeping bowls of nuts around. We adore eating nuts of all kind and today, it is easier to get lower sodium nuts that compensate with great flavors. Have you tried the wasabi flavor almonds? WOW! Those are delicious with a kick. We tend to stay away from smoked flavor since that means more sodium. We also like to mix it up. Sometimes we make our own combination so we can control the salt and flavor. Like taking some cashews, pecans and sunflower seeds, tossing them lightly in canola oil, and sprinkling them with cumin, a little salt and pepper. This is delicious and a great way to get some fiber.  Have a great holiday but stay healthy!

The other day I was driving the boys home from school and listening to music. A song shuffled on that brought up a million memories. It was a hard not to smile and get extremely nostalgic. Doesn’t everybody have those songs that pluck the strings of memory so hard that it makes your whole body vibrate? My song was a little ditty released back in late November of 1987. I remember it really well….

Steve and I drove to Melrose to find the UK release of the Eurythmics album, Savage. It was not scheduled to be released until later in December and Steve and I would not wait. We loved them! So with vinyl in hand, we went back to my home and listened to the entire record in my room. We fell in love with a few of the songs and ignored the obvious b-sides. Either way, the record was great. During this time, I was studying for my comps for my Masters. I could hang out with Steve doing this kind of stuff because this did not need to include the other two friends in the group, which was fine by me.

In November of 1987, without any planning whatsoever, I fell in love with a guy who was already in a relationship. I fell for him on a fateful evening while she was out of town and Steve was busy with other commitments. We were not supposed to be alone and …SHAZAM…love. However, because he was in a relationship and there are rules about that, I stayed away from him. He had other ideas and would show up at my house, unannounced and being cute. I had poor resolve but kept my mouth shut, head down and pretended there was something interesting on the floor.

I cut off contact with him, blaming my exam. I studied all the time and avoided any get together. Spending the afternoon hunting for records and listening to an album was the respite I needed. I passed my exam and came home to find that he had called. My little brother relayed the message that he had called to check on me. Did I pass the exam? Was I happy? I was definitely happy after that.

A month later, I received a call from him telling me that he had broken up with her. I remember my heart pounding  and getting dizzy. I did what any woman would do in that situation. I asked him to go dancing. Steve and I would hit up a gay club in Long Beach called Details. On Wednesdays, they had great music and I was the belle of the ball; one little, chunky girl and dozens of cute guys that loved to dance and would not reject me. I loved it!

Wednesday night was fun as always. That night I had two partners. I felt incredible. He excused himself to go to the bathroom and the song I had first heard just a month before came on. “Hey! Is it my turn…do you want me to sing now…O.K….. Wooooooowww!” I went nuts! I started shouting to him, “I need a man! I need a man!” He ran over to me and we danced. Later I turned to Steve and asked him what he thought of the evening. I remember he said, “The corpse isn’t even cold yet.” I took this snarkiness to be that he approved of my boldness.

The song is a memory trigger of a time when I realized that ‘I need a man’. Not in that sick ‘I am nothing without a man way’ but a ‘I would really like a partner who will love me for who I am and support my awesomeness’.  It was also maturing in different ways as well. I believed I could handle a relationship at that point. I thought I could handle sex. For criminy sake, I was 22 years old! The song etched a place in my psyche that I will never forget. So, whenever the song shuffles on to the car radio I play it loud and lean over to Paul and whisper ’I need a man.’ The response is usually something dirty and private.
