scapegoat 300x225 A Nation in Adversity

Adversity is something everyone experiences. Currently, our entire country is feeling some sort of adversity. Everyone either knows of someone, or are themselves, in financial difficulties. Like some sort of Snidely Whiplash, the economy is robbing us of everything including our homes. People are edgy, nasty and cannot see beyond their own need. We are like lions on a carcass growling at anyone who may appear on the horizon. We are no longer friendly because being nice is weakness and right now the only thing that is taught on the streets is ‘The Eye of the Tiger’.

The most blamed person for all of this is our President, Barack Obama. Through all of this adversity, he has approached the problems with aplomb and diplomacy. People have accused him of everything from socialism to being a Nazi (I will give you a massage if you can explain that one to me) to being too bipartisan to being too…you know….that tyranny of the government thingy. Meanwhile, he stays cool and we wait for him to get fed up and say enough is enough.

What drives me nuts about this is that we forget what a mess he inherited. He is being blamed for his predecessor’s war, financial mismanagement and general disregard for what the constituents wanted. Dick Cheney said it himself that when he was told that 61% of the country did not like the Iraq War he said, ‘So what?!’ The truth is that Obama became president when we should have been playing a game of Not It! Who would want such a job?

As this is CoupleDumb and we do discuss relationships, we must look at Obama‘s relationship to this nation. Right now, as a nation, we are scapegoating our president. This is easy for us as a public. As I mentioned on Monday, we blame people when the shit hits the fan. He is the nation’s whipping boy (and before you get your panties in a bunch look it up). Anything he does or says is dissected and analyzed for any type of angle. People are hell bent on painting our President as a liar, thief, idiot and anything else that could possibly inspire more fear.

You see, when we face adversity we don’t really try to get out of the feeling of anxiety or desperation. What we tend to do is create elaborate methods of dissipating are tension without really addressing the issue. We tend to pull out our defense mechanisms and work them to death. Americans have projected all their fears on Obama and are in complete denial of why they cannot trust him. They will say it is his politics but cannot spell out which policy they distrust. They say it is his promises and cannot name which promise was broken. They say it is his character or his values or his morals or his use of his family or his lack of family focus. I say it is his color.

Adversity has some pretty scary side-effects. Adversity separates the men from the boys and the mature from the bigoted. It s time to take some responsibility for the mess our country is in and work at problem solving instead of blaming. As long as Obama is the focus of our problems, we will never fix our situation. As long as we are oblivious to our defense mechanisms and play the game of stealth racism then we will continue to struggle. What we are doing is blaming him as if I would blame Ronald if our Big Mac was not up to snuff. This is a systemic issue. Something that had a point of beginning but we require a complete mind and policy change if we are ever to see what truly happened.

There is so much to say about this. As a nation, we are handling our adversity like a good bipolar patient. One side spreads fear and the other shits rainbows. We need to return to the middle and see the reality. Perhaps then we can begin to change and fix what is broken.

al gore fire 300x222 WTF of the Week: Reaction to Obamas Nobel Peace Prize

You know, this is a relationship blog. And there is no better example of dysfunctional relationship than politics. Really. Seriously. Politics are handled a lot like nasty break-ups. When a person lacks the sufficient closure and healthy boundaries, they are never able to see their former partner as anything but the slut, whore that broke their heart. This is like political opponents. No matter what their opponent does, they will always be the slut, whore that broke their heart and dashed their aspirations.

So Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize and instead of people saying nice job, we have a nation of assholes saying that it was rigged and he did nothing to earn it. He has created no lasting peace anywhere and nothing has changed. OK, then. Even Slate says the win was for speeches rather than actions. Ok, anything else? So the WTF part comes from the incredible disbelief that people would be so blind that they can’t see that internationally the U.S. has, in less than 6 months, gained a little respect since he became President. When people in 22 different countries were polled and asked ‘Will the U.S. do right in world affairs’, the response was up 37% since Obama took over office [Pew Global Attitudes Project] (Between us it could only go up after Bush). Let’s not remember that the world was pure shit when he took over.

So we wondered what great and awesome things have people done to win a Nobel Peace Prize. Have they built a bridge to heaven made of popsicles and eyelashes? Have they cured cancer with peanut butter and chocolate ice cream? Have they, per chance, learned to mend a broken heart or stopped the rain from falling down by summoning the long forgotten umbrella people? Or more simply, have all of them created a lasting peace anywhere?

The answer may surprise you because as far as we can see, no. In 1994, Arafat, Rabin and Peres shared the prize for their work with the problems in Isreal and Palestine and we all know how well those two places get along. We hear that they are going steady and will announce an engagement soon. Wait, didn’t Gore win this too? Oh yeah, he fixed Global warming right? Nope. He narrated a fucking, depressing movie. He got it for passing out info. Meanwhile we are still sweating our asses off in Miami! Should he give it back? Yo Gore, our neighbor just bought a huge truck that looks like it has 50 cylinders and that rat fuck has never recycled a thing in his life. BTW, this is the same Gore who, while doing the movie, had a huge carbon footprint with his over 20 thousand square feet of houses (he owns 3), private jet (he doesn’t fly commercial) and his electricity wasteful ways.

From the Nobel Prize list, we estimate 90% of the prizes were given for efforts or making people aware of something. How many of you out there believe Obama has not raised any kind of awareness? One awareness he definitely made clear to us is that racism is as alive and well in this country as ever. We just hide behind politics and standards that we never bothered to measure Bush with.

28804135 300x194 WTF of the Week: Can anybody work for the government?

If things don’t change soon, we will need to do a WTF on a daily basis. Seriously people, we write a post everyday of the week except Sundays. If we only did WTFs we would need to take shifts to sleep.

This week was especially stupid. All branches of the government vied for their crown of WTFery King. The President did his speech on Tuesday; however most of the kids in Miami Dade didn’t even get to see it. Why you ask? Simply put, the school board voted not to show it and tentatively left it up to the teachers to include it in their lesson plans. The school board was afraid of lawsuits because they did not send out permission slips in time.  Now there may be some of you who had issue with the President of the United States talking to your child but I have more of an issue having a bureaucrat tell me what is appropriate for my kid.

Then the President had his Health Care speech on Wednesday. Had we known that those speeches were like being at a comedy club, we would have worn our vinyl slickers to avoid the brain splatter. Representative Joe Wilson decided that heckling was allowed on the floor of Congress. During our President’s speech he yelled out ‘You lie’. We don’t know what makes this worse, the fact that the President was heckled by a Congressman during a health care address, not a set at Chuckles Night Club, or that Wilson was actually wrong and illegal immigrants are not covered under the Health Care Bill thus making his asinine actions even stupider. Best part, now he’s getting all badass after his contrition tour. Now he’s all ‘I will not shut my mouth and I will fight for what is right blah blah blah’. How about you quit while you’re behind Joe? How about you show a little sensibility since you completely lack manners? How about you ask another congress person where they get their kinky supplies and purchase a ball gag and shut the fuck up?

So we’re writing the WTF when all of a sudden, we see that the CNN is reporting that the Coast Guard is circling a boat and has fired 10 shots. We think ‘Holy shit, not on 9-11.’ The reports go on to say that all this was taking place while Obama’s motorcade drove right by and he was in some sort of danger. Police, FBI, Coast Guard, Secret Service. WTF? Tension mounted for a while and then we hear, ‘Sorry. Just a training exercise.’ Seriously? On 9-11 when everybody is on edge and ‘Remembering the Tragedy’ you are going onto the Potomac and pretending there is a terrorist threat? Who was the asshat who thought that one up? Wait a second, what about Homeland Security? Wasn’t that department created so you assholes would all talk to each other or was it just another way of getting congressional relatives jobs?

We are turning off the computer and TV after this post. Need a break from stupid.
